What a New York Trip Permit Is

A New York Trip Permit (sometimes called a temporary trip permit) is a short-term vehicle registration authorization that allows an out-of-state commercial truck to legally enter, travel through, or operate within New York when it is not properly registered for New York under the International Registration Plan (IRP)

When a Washington Carrier Needs a NY Trip Permit

Washington-based carriers must get a New York Trip Permit before entering the state if all of the following are true

  1. The vehicle is a commercial truck (typically >26,000 lbs or 3+ axles) — meaning it normally needs apportioned registration under IRP.

  2. The vehicle is not IRP-registered with New York listed on the cab card.

    • If the IRP cab card already includes New York as a jurisdiction, you do not need a trip permit.

If the vehicle is IRP-registered for New York, then you do not need a separate trip permit.

Typical Scenarios Where It’s Required

Carrier based in Washington with apportioned plates that do not include NY on the IRP cab card.
New or leased truck that hasn’t yet received permanent apportioned plates for NY.
Vehicle needing temporary authority to travel into NY for delivery or pickup without full NY registration.

When You Don’t Need a NY Trip Permit

• Your commercial vehicle is IRP-registered and New York is already listed on the cab card.
• You are operating a lighter vehicle (under 26,000 lbs with 2 axles) that doesn’t require IRP.

 Validity

A standard New York Trip Permit is typically valid for 72 hours (3 days), giving enough time to enter, travel through, or make a delivery in New York.
