Step 1: Make sure you qualify
You must register for IRP in Washington if you operate:
- Vehicles over 26,000 lbs GVW
- Vehicles with 3+ axles
- Vehicles traveling in 2 or more states or provinces
Step 2: Gather required documents
Before applying, prepare:
- IRP Application
- USDOT number (must be active)
- Proof of Washington address (place of business or residency)
- Vehicle registration/title copies
- IRS Form 2290 (Heavy Vehicle Use Tax)
- Lease agreement (if applicable)
You’ll also need documents proving your Established Place of Business in Washington.
Step 3: Create an account
You will:
- Create an account
- Select “IRP Fleet”
- Enter your USDOT number and fleet details
- Upload required documents
- Verify your business location
Step 4: Set up your IRP fleet
Inside the system, you’ll:
- Choose carrier type (for-hire, private, etc.)
- Enter vehicle details (VIN, weight, axles)
- Select registration start month
- Add jurisdictions (states you plan to operate in)
Step 5: Pay IRP fees
- Fees are based on:
- Mileage in each state
- Vehicle weight
- Washington collects and distributes fees to other states
Step 6: Receive your credentials
Once approved, you’ll get:
- Apportioned license plates
- Cab card (must stay in the truck at all times)
Step 7: Stay compliant after registration
You must:
- Track miles by state
- Keep records monthly, quarterly, and annually
- Retain records for at least 3–4 years
Simple breakdown
